We want your MRI experience to feel easy and comfortable. 
Here is some information about your scan.

 

What to expect:

  • MRI is an imaging test that uses magnets and radio waves.
  • Scans typically take around 30-45 minutes.
  • You will be able to communicate with the technologist at all times and will be supervised for the entire scan. 
  • You will be given ear protection and a call bell for comfort and safety. 

For your appointment: 

  • Arrive 15 minutes early to complete any required forms. 
  • Bring your health card and piece of photo ID. 
  • Avoid wearing metal hair clips, jewelry or piercings, watches or fitness trackers, hair extensions, glitter makeup or magnetic eyelashes. 

When you arrive:

  • You will be registered for your appointment. 
  • You will complete a screening form to check for any unsafe implants or devices.
  • Your forms will be reviewed by a technologist with you. Please mention any concerns or questions, we are happy to help. 
  • You will be escorted to a change room; we will provide you with a gown and a locker for your belongings. 
  • The technologist will escort you from the change room to the scanner. 

During the scan:

  • You will lie on the MRI table. We will position you, so you are as comfortable as possible. 
  • During the scan, the machine makes loud tapping and banging noises - this is normal. 
  • We will provide music for you to listen to through a headset. 
  • You may feel some warmth in your body during the scan - this is normal. Please let the technologist know if you are uncomfortable. 
  • Try your best to stay as still as possible during the scan. We can provide small breaks if you need. 

Contrast injections:

  • Some exams use a gadolinium-based contrast agent to enhance structures on images. 
  • Contrast is safe to use, and reactions are very rare. 
  • Exam indications and any risk factors will be reviewed to determine of contrast is appropriate. 
  • Contrast will be explained in depth and consent will be obtained prior to any injections.
  • If you are receiving contrast, ensure you are well hydrated before your appointment. Avoid large amounts of caffeine. 

After the scan: 

  • You may return to normal activities. 
  • If you received contrast, drink water throughout the day. 
  • Your referring provider will receive a report from a radiologist. 

Parking & accessibility: 

  • Free parking available on site. 
  • Please let us know if you require mobility assistance. 
  • Entrance to the clinic is at the back of the center.
